Two oral history interviews with Elwood Leonard Demmon, the first at Panama City, Fla., on January 31, 1958, and the second at Asheville, N.C., on February 13, 1959. Demmon discusses his forestry education; his work on rubber plantations in Sumatra and Central America; the U.S. Forest Service experiment stations, especially the Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans and the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in Asheville; developments in forestry in the South; forest conservation; the pulp and paper industries; and noteworthy American foresters.

Elwood Leonard Demmon received A.B. and M.S. degrees in forestry from the University of Michigan in 1914 and 1916. He worked for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, until 1924. He assumed the position of associate silviculturist at the Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans, La., in 1925, became acting director of the station in 1927, and was made director the following year.
